Did you know that the Klang River ranks as the second-largest contributor of plastic waste into the ocean worldwide? It’s a startling fact that should make us all pause and think about the urgent need to address this issue. Our recent excursion to the Klang River allowed our kids to witness the impact of this pollution firsthand, sparking a transformative experience.
Our day began with a visit to a nearby mangrove forest. At first, the students were wow-ed by its beauty. As we travel deeper into the forest, the sight of trash entangled in the roots of the mangroves exposes the ugly truth of “Plastic Pollution”.
As we journeyed deeper into the river system, a disheartening sight met our eyes – logbooms trapping tons of waste.
Amidst the challenges we encountered, we found a glimmer of hope that rekindled our optimism. We witnessed the remarkable work of entrepreneurs dedicated to tackling environmental issues. One such inspiring moment was observing The Ocean Clean Up’s machine actively gobbling up the trash floating in the river.
This innovative technology demonstrated that solutions are within our reach. It showcased how creative minds and entrepreneurship can contribute to cleaning our waterways and oceans, giving us hope for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Our students were inspired to channel their creativity and determination towards creating solutions, just as entrepreneurs would. The impactful experiences of observing the environmental challenges and innovative technologies drove them to think critically and work on innovative ideas to make a positive impact on our world.
We owe a heartfelt thank you to Selangor Maritime Gateway for their educational efforts and for increasing awareness about river pollution. Events like this are crucial in shaping the environmental consciousness of our youth and, in turn, our collective future.
